The 5 Bite Diet has an appealing and easy to market concept that many people seem to find appealing. This concept is the basis of the Why Weight Around? Changing The Weight Loss Strategy book by Dr Alwin Lewis.
This book is the cause of a lot of discussion in the diet and fitness field. Some people love it for its simplicity. Others say it’s just another example of a useless fad diet.
In his book, Dr Lewis recommends the 5 bite approach to eating:
- Drink as much as you want as long as the drinks are free of caloires.
- Skip breakfast (this is something that I, for one, totally disagree with).
- Have 5 bites of any food for lunch.
- Have 5 bites of any food for dinner.
- Eat some protein each day.
- Take a multi-vitamin supplement every day.
Sounds like a pretty gimmicky fad diet plan to me, doesn’t it?
Yet, Dr. Lewis assures the reader that after three days on this regimen, that you will no longer feel hungry at all.
This is not a permanent eating plan as the good Doctor assures us that you can go back to eating normally once you’ve reached your weight goal. This is not such a good advice as you may gain all the weight that you’ve lost back in a hurry.
It seems like the 5 Bite Diet is an attempt to create a gimmicky concept that will sell a lot of books. I mean, what makes the number 5 so special? Why not have 6 bites or 7? When is the number of bites become too high or too low? It seems to me and tha this is a low calorie diet without any real new or seemingly plausible logic to it. I just don’t understand it.
However, you may be convinced otherwise by this video with Dr. Lewis:
5 Bite Diet Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Simple to use.
Cons:
- Doesn’t seem to have real logic behind it.
- May lead to weight rebound.
- Too low on calories.
- Doesn’t touch upon healthier food choices.
In Conclusion
Why Weight Around (5 Bite Diet) doesn’t seem to be a book that can lead to real healthy weight loss results. It seems to be a gimmick made to sell more books. All this book teaches is a way for you to cut down your calories. I don’t see how it can help you avoid getting hungry, I don’t see anything special or new about this method. It is simply a low calorie diet.
You may be able to lose weight with this plan as cutting calories is a way to achieve a calorie deficit. However, the amount of calories may be too low for long term adherence to the program.

I have 3 friends on this diet and all say they have more energy and are feeling great. One lost 66 pounds, another 35 and the 3rd just started and lost 8. Losing weight and keeping it off are two different strategies. Most of us could use an easy, quick way to get the extra 50+ pounds that we are carrying around.
Well I used the 5-bite diet for a month and I shed 20lbs! I am healthy and have kept the weight off for 6 months. You should try it before you knock it.
Wow! Good for you! I read the book, tried it for 1 week, lost 3-4 pounds. Stopped
then tried it again this week and in 3 days I’ve lost…zero!!! So far….I’m not really hungry but I’ve been on a plateau for almost 1 year!! YES!!!!! 1 darn year….I play with the same 3-5 pounds but never go below the plateau weight I’ve been at since august of 2010….I’m so fed up….Looking to maybe doing low-cal diet…??? don’t know anymore….Been to dietician and Weight Watchers….they don’t understand why I don’t lose except to tell me YOU’RE ON A PLATEAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
