In the past I wrote a scathing piece on why your personal trainer may be a waste of money and some people told me horror stories about their own fitness trainers after they read it. However, there are those special personal trainers who can get you into awesome shape in a very short time and make the entire process very enjoyable.
These personal trainers possess certain qualities which make them not just good or proficient at what they do, but remarkable. These qualities may not seem so important when you first hire a trainer, but once you work with one who has them, you will find it much simpler to burn body fat and get fitter.
Here are 7 qualities of remarkable personal trainers:
1. They Listen To You
Each person has their own fitness goals and habits and likes. Remarkable personal trainers listen to their clients and understand their needs, desires, and goals. Then, they are able to tailor a workout plan which is specifically right for their clients.
Remarkable trainers don’t have a specific formula which they use for all their clients. They treat each of them in a unique manner. This way, each client is able to achieve his or her goals in the best way possible.
2. They Don’t Let You Get Off Easy
Fantastic personal trainers never let their clients get off easy. While most people want to have results with as little work as possible, trainers know the truth: this is not realistic. You need to follow an intense workout routine if you want to burn off body fat and get fit.
Remarkable trainers push their clients. They risk their clients anger, but make sure they work hard during each exercise session. They know it’s their duty to get results for their clients and hard work is the only way this can be done.
3. They Focus On You and Only You
Remarkable trainers only have eyes for the client they’re working with at that exact moment. They don’t look at beautiful women (or men) who happen to be at the gym. They don’t try to get more business during a session with a client and they’re not open for idle chitchat or questions from other people. They know that their obligation is for their paying client and no one else.
4. They Motivate You Like No One Else Can
Awesome personal trainers know how to motivate their clients and instill in them the joy of working out. They know how to encourage them when they’re down and how to get them to try harder. They never paint an unrealistic picture and don’t make promises they can’t keep. Instead, they give their clients the sense that it is possible to achieve all their fitness goals if they only work hard and stick to a healthier lifestyle for long enough.
5. They Are Sticklers for Form and Technique
Remarkable trainers will never allow their clients to work in any way which is unsafe or dangerous. They know the importance of correct form and technique when lifting weights or doing other forms of exercise. They will never risk their clients’ health just to get them cosmetic results. It’s part of their ethics.
Now, some people don’t like to be corrected all that much, even if the person who does the correcting obviously knows more than they do. This is also true in the case of personal trainers and clients. A personal trainer may lose clients if he or she are too strict (in the eyes of the client) about form. A remarkable trainer won’t care because the health of the client is first and foremost.
6. They Know How to Create Interesting and Creative Workouts
It’s possible to find all sorts of exercises and workout routines online these days for free. The advantage of a personal trainer, the great ones, is that they’re able to come up with creating workout routines and they know all sorts of exercises which their clients don’t. This allows the clients to enjoy diverse workouts which are enjoyable and interesting.
7. They Are Great Storytellers
Storytelling is a quality that is not given the esteem it deserves. In the field of personal training, it holds special importance. Clients need to feel that human connection with their trainer and they want someone who can make the time fly by and their workout as enjoyable as possible. Great storytelling does all that.
Trainers who know how to tell riveting stories and make their clients laugh and enjoy their time will often find that their clients train harder, better, and with greater motivation. They may also enjoy more clients who will stick with them for a long time.
This is what makes some personal trainers remarkable. I hope that you can find one who belongs to that group to train you.

Great post! I’ve definitely had experiences with sub-par trainers, but I’m thankful for incredible trainers like the ones you mentioned here! I’m so glad I hired my trainer (Josh R. @ 24 Hour Fitness in Northgate, Seattle, WA)—he has helped set me on the right track for my needs. He definitely does all the things you mentioned here and it TOTALLY makes a difference! He taught me circuits that I could do in OR out of the gym with little to no equipment, therefore I had NO excuses to work out. He also helped me set realistic and challenging monthly goals. He also taught me the importance of nutrition. Now instead of eating out almost every meal, I’m meal planning, cooking at home, eating clean, and seeing/feeling healthy results. Because of his expertise, encouragement, and accountability, I’ve been able to rise up to challenges I’d never thought I would and I’m finally in a zone of healthy fitness. Hiring Josh has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made in my life!
Hi Amanda,
I’m glad you liked the post and that you have such a wonderful trainer. It can make all the difference in the world.
I’m sure Josh would love to know how remarkable he is. Don’t forget to tell him.
