8 Fitness Predictions For 2012

by Jonathan

2012 signIt is said that prophecy was given to fools. Well, I’m in a sort of foolish mood these days so I’ll try my hand at some prophesying and share with you my fitness predictions for 2012. It will be fun to look back in December (unless the Mayans get us first) and see how right I was.

So, here are my predictions for 2012…

1. Alternative Workouts Will Dominate

Dumbbells and barbells and fitness machines will lose some of their prominence for other forms of fitness. These will include bodyweight workouts, sports routines, workouts bands training, kettlebell exercises, tactical fitness, etc.

This is a trend that has already shown some power in 2011 and it will get even bigger in the new year as more programs will be made using these exercises and more attention will be given these alternative forms of fitness.

2. MRT Workout Programs Will Flourish

The later part of 2011 was marked by the appearance of fitness plans such as 24/7 Fat Loss which focused on metabolic resistance training workouts. MRT workouts is the new buzzword in the fat loss industry and it will continue to be so in 2012. In fact, famous rapper 50 Cent recently announced that he will publish a book this year which uses MRT workouts to burn body fat quickly. I dare say he won’t be the only one to make such a move.

We will see MRT workouts in many forms including bodyweight and kettlebell workouts. It will be difficult to tell which trainer really knows what makes a good MRT workout routine and who is simply riding on the coattails of this trend. I will do the work for you and keep you informed about the best programs that you should use.

3. Short Workouts

More and more programs will focus on the idea of short and highly intense workouts geared for the most efficient fat loss possible. This may lead to some disappointment as some plans will likely try to take this too far and get to a point in which they become ineffective.

The truth is that you do need to make a serious time investment to get lean. There is a limit to how short your workouts can be. However, considering how time-crunched we all are, short workouts are a major selling point and this alone is enough to ensure that they will continue to be talked about during 2012.

4. More On Hormones For Fat Loss

Lately I’ve been reading and hearing more about the effects of hormones on fat loss. I’ve touched on this lightly when I talked about how to get more sleep and how to reduce stress, but we will see many programs and articles written about a wide variety of hormones and how they affect and accelerate fat loss.

5. Cardio Will Make a Comeback

Cardio has been getting a lot of negative vibes over the past few years as interval training and MRT workouts have been touted as the next best thing for fat loss.

It’s true that steady paced cardio is not the most time-efficient way to lose weight. However, the right cardio routines can still be a powerful fat burning weapon. I predict that in 2012 we will see cardio make a comeback as people will think about new ways to make use of it as part of a complete fat loss program.

Spoiler alert: Rusty Moore, author of Visual Impact For Women, has informed me that he is working on a cardio-centric fat loss plan that is due to be released soon. I will keep you informed about it when it is finally made available.

6. Demographically Specific Fitness and Nutrition Plans

There’s no doubt that the market of diet and fitness plans is a pretty full one. One ways to get exposure in such a market is to carve it up to very small niche type markets. This will be done by creating demographically specific plans in 2012.

I’m not just talking about plans for men or women but also age specific plans, programs for people with sedentary jobs, for people who like sports, people who suffer from specific injuries, those who are carb lovers and so on. The possibilities are pretty endless and we will see how creative trainers and publishers can be as they begin to create new markets and communities of people this year.

7. People Will Still Buy Junk Products

Unfortunately, people will still spend their hard earned money on fitness products that cost too much and deliver too little. I had hopes that with the internet and the availability of customer reviews that shady products will not have a lot of success. I was wrong and I will probably be disappointed again this year.

People who are desperate to lose weight are simply vulnerable to borderline marketing tactics and some marketers know how to prey on these. I’ve written before on how to get fit on a budget and will continue to do so in the hope that I will help save some cash for at least one reader. One would be enough.

8. Outdoor Workouts Will Become Popular

While gym workouts and home workouts will continue to play a big role in many diet and fitness plans, we will see a shift into more outdoor and nature workouts. These will include outdoor running, hill sprints, hiking, and various other activities. People are desperate to get a taste of nature and they will love to burn fat while doing so.

That’s it for my predictions. Have an awesome 2012.
