The Bipartisan Way To Lose Weight – Democrats and Republicans Diet

by Jonathan

political sign postAll this talk about the debt ceiling and how the two parties in Congress have presented their case to the American people reminds me the two ways in which people address the need to lose weight: exercising and cutting calories.

It seems to me that these two ways correspond well to how the the Democrats and Republicans view the national debt and the ways in which it has to be reduced. One party says it’s a matter of eating too much while the other says that it’s a matter of exercising too little.

If the national debt can be equated to a person being overweight, you find that the Republicans and Democrats view the solution in a totally opposite way.

The Republicans want to cut calories (or spending). They say that you’re simply eating too much and that if you only cut down on the amount of calories that you eat (or that the government feeds you) that you will lose weight. Simple, right?

The problem is that some Republicans seem to want you to cut your calories to such a low level that you will encounter some nasty side effects: you won’t have energy, your health may suffer, and you may go into starvation mode, causing your metabolism to slow down making further weight loss (the equivalent of financial recovery) very difficult to achieve.

The Democrats say that there’s another way to lose weight: exercising more, expending more energy. In this case, exercising more can be equated to how the Democrats want to raise taxes. Naturally, in this case these tax hikes would apply only to wealthier Americans, but the principle is that the Democrats don’t want to cut calories, they want to increase the revenue, or in this case, the amount of calories you burn through exercise.

So, on the one hand you have the Republicans who say you need to cut and on the other you have the Democrats who say you need to spend more energy (or bring in more taxes) to deal with the deficit in a more proactive way.

Naturally, the problem with the Democrat’s viewpoint is that if you eat too much (or spend too much) you will need an enormous amount of exercise to burn off all those calories and actually begin to lose weight (lower the national debt). You may also injure yourself in the process.

The Bipartisan Way Works

As is usually the case in politics, a compromise is in order. You need a bipartisan solution. You can’t just cut calories and you can’t just exercise for hours. Either way may work but it will not work as well as it could have done and it will be a hard and unpleasant process.

To lose weight the right way you need to combine both of these approaches: a sensible reduction in calories, or at least some control over what you put in your mouth, and an increase in the level and effectiveness of your workouts. To cut the national debt you need to both cut spending and bring in more revenue. To lose weight you need to cut calories consumed and burn more of them actively.

Why does the bipartisan way to lose weight works so well?

1. You don’t have to take drastic measures – Cutting your calorie intake a bit and increasing your activity level a little should pose no problem. If you chose one approach over the other you would have to do pretty drastic things, either exercise yourself to exhaustion or cut your calories to starvation levels.

2. It’s easier to stick to your plan for the long run. Losing weight is not a one time thing. Neither is cutting the national debt. If you try to solve this by just cutting calories or exercising a lot, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to stay the course until you reach your optimal weight. A more moderate approach will help you stick to your program.

3. You will see faster results – Combining exercise and nutrition will produce a faster weight loss. It’s like squeezing something from both sides. The pressure will be far greater than if you just exerted force at one end.

In Conclusion

You may be inclined to the Republican way of losing weight by cutting down calories or the Democrat way of increasing exercise. I urge you to find some middle ground that combines both. If you do, you will achieve faster results because the bipartisan way to lose weight is indeed the better one. It has the best chance to yield long term results.
