Joel Marion is considered a highly qualified nutrition expert who always bases his fat loss programs on rigorous scientific research. He has helped tens of thousands of men and women to shed weight and to look and feel better.

The basis of the diet is that having a cheat day every once in a while can actually help you boost your metabolism and improve your production and effectiveness of Leptin, what some people call your “Fat Burning Hormone“.

Cheat Days and Leptin

While there’s no doubt that reducing the amount of calories you eat and creating a calorie deficit will results in you losing weight, Joel Marion states that restricting your calories for too long will not results in a long term weight loss. On the contrary, this may lead you to gain back the weight that you lost and then some.

The reason is that, as Joel Marion claims, a calorie restriction that’s done for a long time will lead to a reduction in Leptin. This will severely limit your body’s ability to continue to burn fat. Instead, it will hang to your fat stores as if for dear life.

As Leptin levels fall only after a few days of calorie restriction, you have a grace period in which your body can still burn fat fast. After that, you have to renew your levels of Leptin.

This is what Cheat Days are for. Joel Marion makes the case that the occasional cheat day will great boost your levels of Leptin, allowing you to once again go on a few days of calorie restriction with a fast fat burning rate. This is true no matter how long you need to stay on the diet, whether you need to lose 10 pounds or a 100.

How the Cheat To lose Diet Works

The Cheat To Lose Diet works in weekly cycles. For 6 days you follow a low calorie and low carb diet, with the first day being the lowest and the 6th being the highest in both carbs and calories. On the 7th day, you get to cheat. A Cheat Day is a day in which you can eat whatever you want and even overeat. It’s all part of bringing Leptin back to proper levels. The Diet has 3 main phases:

Priming – This is the initial stage in which the diet is at its most strict form. You go on a week of reduced carbs, a week of low GI carbs, and a week of high GI carbs. This is followed by a day of cheating.

Core – This is the main phase of the program in which you have 6 days of increasing carbs and higher and higher GI carbs until the Cheat Day every week. You follow this phase until you reach your weight target.

You should also exercise for 3 times each week for 30 minutes each. The book is not very rich in exercise guidelines. The online version of the program is more elaborate.

Maintenance – This is the phase that comes after you lose the weight and continues for the rest of your life to help you maintain your weight loss.

In addition to the main program, the book also includes a variety of recipes, meal plans, and detailed scientific run down of the research at the basis of the method.

Pros and Cons of Cheat To Lose

Pros:

  • Very well written.
  • Allows you to eat your favorite foods.
  • Encourages exercise.
  • Not restrictive as a whole.
  • Based on extensive scientific research.

Cons:

  • The Cheat Day may become an overeating day for some people.
  • Does not touch enough on the issue of Emotional Eating.

In Conclusion

The Cheat To Lose Diet is a worthy book with an interesting and doable method. The first 3 weeks may be a bit hard to do but after that, the Cheat Day becomes something to look forward to, something that keeps you going.

Due to the manipulation of Leptin, you can continue to lose weight for a long time without plateauing. This is why cheating has become part of so many diet plans.
