Gymboss

by Jonathan

gymbossA few weeks ago I got an email from Gymboss.com asking me if I would like to review their new workout timer, the Gymboss. While I mostly review products such as dumbbells or exercise machines, I thought it would be a good idea to include this product as well.

I received a complimentary Gymboss with no strings attached to allow me to write an objective and truthful review. Now that I’ve used this product during a couple of my home workouts, I can write my own experiences with it.

What is the Gymboss

The Gymboss is a new workout timer that can help you time the various exercise sets you do during your workouts. It can be carried in your pocket or clipped to a pants pocket or waistline. It is so lightweight that I didn’t even notice it was there. It certainly doesn’t hinder you in any way during your workout.

This timer has a number of benefits and capabilities: it can act as a simple stop watch, just timing your exercises. However, this isn’t the main attraction of this product, and I certainly never used it as just a stop watch.

The main benefit of the Gymboss is how it helps you time intervals and rest times during your workouts.

You can program 1 or 2 intervals which the Gymboss times and alternates between. For instance, say you want to do lunges for 60 seconds on each set and to rest for 30 seconds in between. You set the first interval to 60 seconds and the other interval to 30. The timer will alternate between one interval and the other for as many times as you wish (I think the limit is 99 times in total). You can set the number of times this cycle will occur.

This is something that helps me in a few ways and I believe it can help you to:

1. I don’t need to look at a clock in the gym or at home to time my sets or my rest time. I don’t want to have to follow the time. I want something to do it for me, which the Gymboss does. I find that I actually workout harder when I don’t need to look at a clock myself.

2. In the gym, I often lose track of my rest time between sets and it ends up being longer than it should be. Resting too long between sets can be detrimental to your workout and make it less effective. Not the sort of thing you want to happen if you’re trying to achieve maximum fat loss. With the Gymboss timing the rest interval for me, I just don’t make this mistake anymore and my entire workout time is lower.

3. I can just focus more on my workout now that I don’t need to time anything.

The Gymboss Alert

You may be wondering how you known when one interval ends and the other begins. The Gymboss alerts you to it. You can pick which kind of alert the timer will give: vibration, high beep, low beep, or a vibration with beeping. You can also choose how long the beep will be: 1, 5, or 10 seconds long.

You should be aware that the beeps can be loud so if you’re working out in the gym, do not set the alert for more than 1 second. At home you can choose what you like. I think that the low beep is enough to keep you alert. If you’re working out with music than the vibration alert is what you should use.

General details

You can use the Gymboss for strength training workouts, flexibility, cardio workouts, anything you want. It can be quite effective for interval training workouts as you can easily keep track of the actual intervals.

You can get this product online at Gymboss.com in various colors. Priced at $19.95, the Gymboss is inexpensive and can help you improve your workout experience. It can’t do the workouts for you, of course, so it will only be useful if you are actually committed to working out regularly. However, if you are, then this can be a helpful and worthwhile tool. I am using it myself regularly.
