Blueberries are a great example of an overlooked food. While most of us do love to eat these berries, we don’t usually think too much about them in terms of how good they may be for us.

Tangy, colorful blueberries are cousins of cranberries and bilberries. These little berries have a deep blue or maroon color and are characterized by a waxy white protective covering on their colorful coats.

In a recent report, scientists compared 60 fruits and vegetables for their antioxidant capability and blueberries topped the list! In addition to this, blueberries also contain vitamin C, Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin E, copper, iron, selenium and zinc.
The anthocyanidins in blueberries destroy free radicals that are responsible for various conditions like glaucoma, ulcers, varicose veins, hemorrhoids and different kinds of cancers. Note: these berries are not the only ones with this quality. Fighting free radicals is also one of the main health benefits of acai berries.
Due to the high concentration of Vitamin C and iron, blueberries have the ability to raise the hemoglobin count in the blood. This in turn boosts the immunity of the body.
Certain constituents in blueberries cut the risk of precancerous lacerations in the colon significantly. Flavonoids in blueberries also reduce the risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Blueberries are not only good for your tummy. They are quite literally food for the brain as they contain enzymes that lead to nerve cell regeneration in the brain. Therefore, blueberries may help to reverse memory loss and may act as a first line of defense against diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Women have much to gain by taking in blueberries as these may slow down or even prevent the development of osteoporosis.
Experiments show that blueberries can improve nighttime vision and can speed up the time taken for the eyes to adjust to darkness.
Blueberries are good for the stomach as they contain high amounts of soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber decreases cholesterol levels in the blood. The fiber content along with tannins in blueberry reduces inflammation in the stomach and promotes the health of the urinary tract. How to eat
As with other fruits, blueberries are best taken in naturally without cooking. Berries must be washed and patted dry to remove any traces of pesticides. You can buy dried blueberries and I recommend to buy organic ones as well.
Blueberries may be frozen without damaging their nutrient value. Frozen blueberries may be added to cold cereals.
Blueberries may be added to yoghurt and chilled to make delicious desserts. This is a perfect example of a tasty desert which is great for weight loss purposes.
Many people enjoy blueberry pies, muffins and cobbler.

Blueberries are delicious. Though they are seasonal, they may be frozen and preserved. They are a powerhouse of nutrients and can go a long way in promoting good health and mental sharpness in people. I recommend including them in any diet plan that you may be using.
