If you don’t have time to go to the gym, want to save the money a membership costs, or simply prefer to exercise in the privacy of your home, this article is for you.
You can achieve great things with home workouts. You can lose body fat, tone your muscles, and transform your body… if you do things right.
In this article I want to talk about how to make your home workouts more effective. I believe that the tips I will share will help you get faster and better results. These tips apply to men and women of all fitness levels.
Give Yourself Space
The first thing you must have to do a proper workout is space. You need space to store your equipment and to put it during your workouts. You also need space to move about, especially if you do advanced exercises like lunge jumps or burpees.
You don’t need a special room to do effective home workouts but you do need to be able to create a workout space whenever you need it. I used to place a workout mat on the floor of my living room and do all of my exercises on it. My entire space was 5 feet wide and 8 feet long. It was enough. The weights I would place on the floor of my utility room and take them out when I needed them.
Naturally, if you plan on using big fitness equipment such as a power tower or a home gym, you will need more space. For weight lifting, a smaller space will suffice.
Some Equipment Does Help
I’m a big fan of bodyweight exercises and I know how effective they can be. Your body is an incredible workout tool and can be used to do elaborate exercises. However, some fitness equipment can give you more options and help you do a more intense workout. You don’t need to spend a lot of money or buy bulky equipment. You can do a lot with simple stuff. I use dumbbells, workout bands, a stability ball, and a workout mat to train with.
Other affordable equipment you may consider is a pull up bar such as the iron gym, kettlebells, a barbell and a workout bench. Work within your budget and always remember that everything takes up space.
Naturally, if you can spare an entire room you may consider getting a home gym, a treadmill or a rowing machine. However, these can cost quite a lot.
Note: Equipment is not necessary to do a good workout. If you want to do bodyweight exercises, this is a program I recommend: Bodyweight Blueprint for fat loss.
Eliminate Distractions
A good workout is continuous. If you get distracted you will lose momentum, your body will get cold and your results will suffer for it. You need to eliminate distractions. Turn off your cell phone. Log out of your email. Turn of your computer. Tell your kids to keep the noise down and direct them to talk to your spouse if they need anything. Don’t answer the phone, let your machine take care of it. This is your time and you need to be focused.
Some people like to exercise in front of the TV while some say it reduces your focus. If you can workout and not watch TV at the same time it would be best. However, if you have little free time and you want to watch a show and train at the same time, do it! It’s much better than sitting on the couch.
Create the Right Workout Environment
If you don’t watch TV while you train, you will want to create the right environment for your workout. I’m talking about music. Some say that you need upbeat music to give you energy. I say listen to what you love. I’ve done awesome workouts listening to Paul Simon songs and none of them will be played at any aerobics class any time soon. Whatever makes you happy should be playing while you train.
You should get your equipment ready so you won’t have to essemble or fetch it during the workout itself. Have a water bottle ready and full. Know exactly what you’re going to do during your workout so it will flow as fluidly as possible.
Train Your Entire Body
Just because you’re working out at home does not mean that you shouldn’t train your entire body or that your workout has to be less intense than one which can be done at the gym. Check out some these bodyweight exercises and you will see that you can work on every muscle group at home. You can either train them all during one workout or split them into two groups and train them on different workouts.
In Conclusion
Working out at home can be great. You don’t need to wait for a fitness machine to become vacant, you can choose your own music, and you don’t need to spend time driving to a gym.
You can get excellent results from home workouts. Just keep your focus, avoid distractions, and be serious about it. If you do, you will achieve excellent results. For ideas about how to train at home check out this hotel workout and this short but effective 10 minute workout routine.
