To me, fast food is a riddle. I know it’s convenient, but I still don’t understand how it became so successful. How did we, as a society, allow ourselves to eat this stuff. It seems that it matters little to us that it’s unhealthy or that it makes us fatter. We still continue to eat it and allow fast food companies to make a fortune each year.
Fast food is popular for a reason: it’s cheap, it’s alluring with bright colored boxes, clever marketing, and catchy slogans. The food comes quickly and it certainly looks good and sometimes it even tastes good. It can be a challenge to resist all this.
Yet, resist it you must if you want a good chance to lose weight. It is possible to become immune to the temptation that fast food offers. Let’s go over some tips on how to do this.
Eat a Solid Breakfast
If you want to avoid the munchies during your day you need to start it right. Eating a solid breakfast will keep you full for hours and improve your resistance to fast food. Eating a good breakfast also gives you energy and gets you into a healthy state of mind for the rest of the day.
In your breakfast include a good portion of protein, fiber and plenty of water. Avoid sugary cereals and white flour.
Stop Watching Commercials
The desire for fast food is built by insanely effective commercials on TV. You need to nip it in the bud. Whenever a fast food commercial comes on you need to silence the TV and turn your head. Don’t listen to their enticing words and don’t watch the alluring food (it is never really that good in real life) they display. Don’t let them mess with your mind.
Have Healthy Snacks With You
To make sure you don’t get the urge to eat some fast food during the day, you should carry some healthy snacks with you. Cut some veggies or take some fruit with you to work. Take some nuts or almonds and mix them with raisins. Put that in a small bag and you’ll have a delicious, filling and healthy mix to munch on during the day.
Having healthy snacks can also help you avoid all the office unhealthy “goodies” that people bring with them.
Eat Before You Go Out
If you’re going out shopping or to watch a movie, make sure to eat a good meal before you leave your house. You don’t want to be hungry when you walk by a fast food restaurant. The temptation may be too hard to resist when you’re hungry.
After a good meal you will feel sated and won’t have the same kind of cravings that you would have experienced had you been hungry.
Learn About Fast Food Through Documentaries
If you’re the sort of person who needs to be shocked into doing something, watching some documentaries about fast food and modern food production may be just what you need.
Super-Size Me is probably the best known film of this kind, but Fast Food Baby and Food Inc. may also give you the nasty shock you need to start picking your food sources more carefully and to eat healthier.
Make Healthy Plans
Often, people walk into a fast food restaurant even though they had no plans of doing so. It’s the convenient solution when you suddenly get hungry. To avoid this you need to make healthy eating plans. Never go out without knowing where you plan to eat and always choose a healthy place to do so.
Study The Calorie Content
When you look at the calorie content of some of the dishes and meals in fast food restaurants you suddenly realize just how fattening they can be.
For instance, take the Texas BBQ Whopper from Burger King. It’s a whopping 520 calories with 21 grams of fat and 15 grams of sugar. Add to that some sweet potato fries and you get another 450 calories. Drink a large Coca-Cola and you get another 380 calories for a grand total of 1350 calories. This is more than half of what the average woman would need in a whole day (and many men as well). And I still haven’t talked about sauces, mind you.
Educate yourself on the real calorie price of this food and then make a more informed decision about it.
Hang Around Healthy People
If social pressure is part of the reason you find yourself in a fast food joint, then you need to find more healthy people to hang around with. I’m not telling you to ditch your friends, but don’t go out with them around meal times or make them understand that you won’t be joining them in any fast food place.
Being around healthy people is the best way to learn new habits. It is just easier because these people influence you to act more responsibly and eat better. So, choose your lunch companions carefully.
Pack Your Own Lunch
If you want to stop eating fast food during your lunch hour you need to bring your food with you. Cooking your own food is one of the best nutrition habits there are as it gives you total control over your food. This will also save you some money, so it’s a double benefit.
Fast food can be quite addictive, so it is a challenge to overcome the craving for it. However, with the tips I outlined above you have a good chance to stop this bad habit and to improve your diet tremendously. The road to a sexier physique will be much easier.
