If you ever found yourself walking around an airport terminal, looking for something healthy and nutritious to eat, this is an article you simple have to read. The same goes if you’re about to take a trip.
Airports today seem to offer very few healthy and nutritious choices. For the most part, the restaurants you find there are fast food restaurants which offer an assortment of high sodium, high calorie dishes that will probably not be good for you.
The problem is that you often need to spend hours waiting for your flight and the prospect of relying on the food served on the plane to satisfy your hunger is not very appealing as well. Therefore, the urge to grab a little (unhealthy) food before you get on the plane is a powerful one.
Let’s see some of the ways in which you can eat healthy at airports:
1. Bring your own food
You may be thinking that this is cheating in some way as the food you’re eating is not bought at the airport itself. So what? My goal is to help you pass the time you spend in the terminal without succumbing to the temptation of eating bad food. Bringing your own is one of the best ways to do so, and is probably a more affordable one too.
You can make some healthy sandwiches before you go to the airport, pack some fruit and vegetables, and so on. Easy, affordable, and healthy. It’s the best thing you can do.
2. Eat only salad
While some airports don’t have a salad bar, you should be able to find salads at fast food restaurants. Most have some salad today to cater to the more health conscious crowd. If you really get hungry, this is the kind of dish I recommend. Say no to dressings as they often contain a lot of calories and really defeat the purpose of eating a salad in the first place.
3. Avoid buying sodas (and some coffee drinks)
One of the main calorie sources you can find are sodas. You wouldn’t believe how many calories sodas contain and usually the provide little nutritional value. Some coffee drinks are also the same way. You wouldn’t believe how many calories coffee may contain. If you get thirsty during your stay at the airport, either buy a bottle of water or find a cooler (most airports I’ve been in have them).
4. Buy a nut mix
This is something that I did during my last journey. I was walking around the airport feeling famished and I even considered eating some fast food (and probably feeling guilty afterwards). Luckily, I found a store which sold a nut mix. Each bag contained almonds, cashews, and raisins. I enjoyed this mix more than I ever would have enjoyed any burger or pizza, and I think you would too.
In Conclusion
You have options. You don’t need to eat whatever it is that airport restaurants offer. You can find better and healthier choices. It is really up to you. While eating one bad meal isn’t the end of the world, why don’t you wait a bit until you actually begin your vacation (where a lot of people are less strict about their meals) and eat healthy food at the airport.
