How To Make Exercise a Habit

by Jonathan

woman doing a hip extensionWe all know that exercise is healthy for you and can also help you burn the fat off your body and tone your muscles. The problem is that exercise isn’t a one time thing. You need to be doing it regularly to reap the benefits it offers.

This can become a challenge as today’s busy lifestyle presents many distractions that compete for our time and attention. Not to mention the fact that sometime you just don’t feel like exercising at all.

How can you make sure that you’ll get the right amount of exercise in your life?

The first thing you can do is to make exercise more fun and the second thing is to turn it into a habit. By this I mean that you make it such a basic part of your regular routine that you will only rarely do without it.

Let’s go over some tips on how to make exercise a habit in your life, one which becomes easy to adopt.

Schedule Your Workouts

What do you do with important appointments? You schedule them in advance. They have their own place and time and you usually write them down in your datebook or set reminders in your cellphone. You take steps to make sure you don’t miss them. You need to do the same things for your workouts. Schedule them and write down the time in which you’ll perform them. Once something is written down it becomes a more powerful commitment and one which you won’t likely break (for more on how powerful this is read this: writing weight loss goals). Make sure you give your workouts ample time during your workouts.

Set regular times for your workouts

To make something a habit it needs to be repeated over and over again. To make your workouts as routine as possible, you should do them at the same time each week. Scheduling is a big part of that but you shouldn’t look for gaps in your schedule to fill them with workouts. You need to have predetermined times in which you exercise and you may only deviate from those times in case of a true emergency or other unexpected or special event. The reason why my morning ritual exercise routine works so well for me is that I know exactly when to do it, it never slips my mind, and I am committed to it.

Have a reward system in place

You know that you need to do your workouts so you should be rewarded or punished according to how well you stick to this system.

You need a positive reward system for a week in which you do all of your workouts as planned. A Cheat Meal in which you can indulge yourself in some of your favorite foods (even fattening ones) may be a good choice to make. Don’t worry, cheat meals can actually be beneficial to weight loss and some diet plans actually make use of them (one example is the xtreme fat loss diet plan).

You also need a negative reward system in place for when you’ve missed out on some of your workouts. You need to have a small but annoying punishment ready. Cleaning the entire house can be one thing you need to do, or having an accountability buddy to which you actually need to hand over some money for each transgression. Don’t make this punishment too harsh. But it should matter to you.

Workout with a friend

If you train with a friend, it will be unfriendly for you to cancel or miss out on workouts. You will feel committed to your friend, which is why working out with a buddy can help you exercise more often and more regularly.

In Conclusion

Follow the tips above to make exercise into a habit that you can follow regularly and benefit from. Remember, to help you tone your body and improve your health, exercise must become a routine in your life.
