Question: I’m here today with Nick Parker, the creator of the Secret to Burning Fat. Thanks for joining me today, Nick. For the benefit of our readers who don’t know you… yet, tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience as a trainer.
Answer: It’s great to be here thanks for having me. Well, I’m a nationally certified personal trainer, nutrition consultant, life coach, and author. I’ve been blessed to train over 25, 000 sessions over the last 14 years.
One of the greatest rewards in my life next to my wife and kids is being able to see all the lives that have been completely transformed. It is really awesome to see someone go from being overweight, depressed, and miserable to really fit, happy, and excited about life. I have actually been 33 pounds overweight at one point in my life and I realized that it really changes how you feel physically and emotionally.
I’ve done a lot of trial and error and found what really works and what doesn’t work for losing fat and some of what works surprised me. I also realized that there is a lot of bad information out there in the diet and weight loss industry that is steering people by the masses in the wrong direction, what I call the yo-yo diet roller coaster. This is where you gain weight, lose some of it, gain it back or more, then lose a few pounds again, the cycle never ends. So many people have sat in my office on their initial visit looked me in the eyes some with tears rolling down their cheeks and wondered why they can’t keep the weight off.
After seeing this over and over it really lit a fire under me to teach the world the truth about fat loss and help people lose that stubborn fat once and for all. This is why The Secret to Burning Fat was created, to help people escape the lies of the diet and fitness industries and finally lose all the weight they want and keep it off forever.
Question: One of the things that most impressed me about the Secret To Burning Fat is the way you deal with psychology . How important is psychology in a fat loss process?
Answer: Psychology is huge when it comes to fat loss. Losing weight and transforming your body starts way before you ever do your first exercise or eat your first fat burning food. Fat loss is a very emotional battle and if that battle is not won it will be pretty hard not only to lose weight but also to keep it off.
Our emotions affect the foods we eat, how much we eat, if we workout or not, and how much effort we put towards our workouts. Every aspect of fat loss is affected by our thinking and our emotions and if those are not under control then neither are we, so it will be difficult to have much fat loss success. On the other hand I have seen people really take control of their thinking, attitude, and emotions and blew me away with how they transformed their bodies.
I remember seeing Jen who was very overweight, never had a boyfriend at the age of 39, and was really insecure take control of what was going on in her head, got her motivation fired up and ended up losing 121 pounds of fat. That completely changed her life. She was a brand new person inside and out. That’s why it’s so important to first deal with the root cause of weight gain. You have to change your thinking before being able to change your body.
Question: You talk about emotional triggers, something I found very interesting. What’s an emotional trigger and how can it help our readers to lose weight?
Answer: An emotional trigger is when someone experiences a certain emotion or thought that shoots them into action. For example, let’s say Mary, who is a fictional character but her story rings true for millions of people, Mary has been gaining weight slowly over time and one day she goes to put on her jeans which are already two sizes larger than she used to wear. When Mary tries to pull them up they just won’t go. So she gets really frustrated, even angry and says “I’m not going up another size this is ridiculous, I can’t take it anymore” and finally starts taking action to lose the weight.
What Mary experienced was her breaking point and this one situation of not fitting into her already larger jeans caused all kinds of suppressed emotions and thoughts to start flying around which lead to taking action on losing weight.
I use a really interesting technique that has worked for thousands of people to help get them highly motivated called trigger charts. You write down your fat loss goal with a deadline and then under that goal your write down the top 3 reasons why that goal is so important to you. These are your “joy” triggers. Example would be “I want to get back into my skinny jeans so that I will enjoy shopping and getting ready in the mirror again”. The key is to really dig deep and write down exactly what you want and WHY! Keep asking why over and over again until you truly discover why you want to reach this goal. The deeper you dig the better.
Under those three you list 3 “pain” triggers which are 3 consequences or fears of not reaching your goal and how that will affect you. For example, “If I don’t lose 35 pounds I will still wake up every morning with anxiety about what I’m going to wear that day which leads to frustration and I will still be taking out my frustrations on my family, which could lead to other problems”.
Doing this simple exercise will be one of the best things you can do to completely begin a total body transformation. You need to clearly know what you want and why you want it.
Question: In the Secret to Burning Fat, you talk about eating according to your metabolic type. Are different metabolic types the reason why some diets work for some people and not for others? How do metabolic types effect your results?
Answer: Absolutely, there is a lot of debate in the industry over what macronutrient ratio works best for burning fat. For those who don’t know what I mean this is what percentage of your nutrition should come form carbs, fats, and proteins.
Everyone is different and unique. We have different body types, we oxidize food differently, some people are more sensitive to carbs than others, and the list goes on. That’s why it’s so critical to find out how your body uses food and what’s your personal fat burning ratio. Once you start eating a nutrition plan that is based on your metabolic type your body will start burning fat more efficiently and your energy will get a big boost too.
Question: How hard is it for someone to determine their metabolic type and can all types lose weight with your program?
Answer: There are several ways of doing this the Vitamin C test, the Niacin test, or the simple questionnaire in the Secret to Burning Fat that will help you discover which type of oxidizer you are: fast, slow, or balanced. It doesn’t matter what type you are because all three types can burn fat what matters is understanding what type you are. When you eat the right amounts of carbs, fats, and proteins your body will not only burn fat faster but you will feel more satisfied and your energy will stabilize so you don’t have to deal with the crashing energy levels an hour after you eat.
