Israeli Army Diet Review

israeli army soldier picture The Israeli Army Diet is a fad diet which was popular in the 1970s and the beginning of the 80s. It was promoted as being used by new recruits in the Israeli Defense Forces (something which isn’t true as this plan has nothing to do with the Israeli army).

I have no idea where this claim came from and how it originated. This is one of those diet plans that have simply come to be, without an apparent author or creator. Why some of these diets withstand the test of time and continue to be followed by people over the years is unclear. The GM Diet and the Russian Air Force Diet are two similar programs.

It seems that these diets survive because they are so simple to follow. They are free to use and have a few very simple steps that anyone can understand. This may be part of their appeal. They also don’t require any special food or equipment, and no exercise.

The Israeli Army diet is an extreme program with limited food selection and very low calorie intake. As such, you can achieve a fast weight loss with it because you’re cutting your calorie intake drastically. However, this will likely be a short term weight loss and will not last for long.

The reason is that you will likely experience a metabolic slowdown which will lead to long term weight gain in addition to other health issues. In addition, you’re not creating any new life habits which you can use to start leading a healthy routine which is needed to maintain your weight once the diet has been completed.

Israeli Army Diet Eating Plan

The Israeli Army Diet is an 8 day eating plan which has 4 phases of 2 days each. On each of these phases you can eat just one food item. Here’s how it goes:

  1. Days One – Two: Apples (black tea/coffee allowed)
  2. Days Three – Four: Cheese (black tea/coffee allowed)
  3. Days Five – Six: Chicken (black tea/coffee allowed)
  4. Days Seven – Eight: Salad (black tea/coffee allowed)

As you can see, the diet is very limited and the food selection seems bizarre. I have no idea why these particular foods have been chosen. They make no sense to me. The diet is far from balanced. You’re not getting the full spectrum of nutrients that you need in order to be healthy.

Israeli Army Diet Pros and Cons


  • Can lead to a very fast weight loss.


  • Provides a short term weight loss only.
  • No exercise included in the plan. This is partly why I don’t believe it can help you achieve long term results.
  • You may feel tired, lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous, and weak. This is due to the lack of calories and nutrients.
  • Very bad food selection. Some would even say that it’s crazy.
  • Very hard to stick to this diet. Due to the poor food selection and the low calorie intake provided.

In Conclusion

The Israeli Army Diet isn’t recommended. It is not healthy, hard to stick to for even 8 days, and isn’t likely to produce a long term weight loss. I know that you may have some deadline you need to lose weight for and this may seem like a good idea, but I urge you to reconsider. This kind of eating plan can be unhealthy. This isn’t worth trying.
