I’m very happy to conduct an interview with a British fitness trainer today. I want to give you a view of how things are done around the world, so this interview is a good way to do so. I hope that you enjoy it and find it useful.
Question: My guest today is Jason Squires from SquiresFitness. Jason is a fitness trainer and nutrition expert from the United Kingdom and manages an online personalized fitness and diet plan. Thank you for joining me today, Jason. What can you tell our readers about your experience and relevant credentials in fitness and nutrition?
JS (stands for Jason Squires): Hey Jonathan! Thanks for having me. Well, where to start! I first stepped into a gym when I was 16, and honestly had no idea what to do. My initial goal was to improve my fitness – as I got to the point in my teenage years where all I did was play video games.
Anyway, after a few weeks of trial and error, I started to take it more seriously, and grew to LOVE the feeling after a good workout. My body shape also began to change and my confidence was at an all time high – I had found my calling!
I have been living a healthy lifestyle as well as exercising regularly for the previous 9 years. Getting certified as a Personal Trainer was the only option after finishing university. However, I also knew that a certification in nutrition was also required in order to provide future clients with the correct advice they needed. So I then added that string to my bow and studied for a certification in Diet & Nutrition.
But having two pieces of paper which stated that I am qualified was only half of the equation. Real world experience is the other half, and thankfully – I LOVE helping people. Especially when it comes to getting in shape and improving their fitness.
And here we are today, 9 years experience, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Diet & Nutrition Adviser, and passionate about helping people get in shape.
Question: Most of our readers are American and we all know how big the obesity problem is in the US. What is the situation like in the UK?
JS: It’s not looking good on this side of the pond either. Obesity in the UK is currently at an all time high. With quick and easy food such as microwavable meals, junk food, etc, and with the majority of the population living a busy lifestyle, the temptation to neglect our health and fitness is high.
What does frustrate me though, are all the ‘promises’ that the diet industry makes to people wanting to get in shape. Fad diets are as rife over here as I can imagine they are over in the US. Furthermore, they aren’t healthy.
I sincerely believe that the correct education is all that is needed to slow down (and ultimately reverse) the crazy obesity situation both in the US and the UK.
Question: You have a program called SquiresFitness. What can you tell us about this plan?
JS: Ahh, my pride and joy! Well, SquiresFitness is an online personal training program. We have a team of certified Personal Trainers and Diet & Nutrition Advisors who coach our clients over a 12 week period to get them in shape.
In essence, we create a personalized 12 week workout program specific to our clients goals. Their current daily diet is also assessed, and suggestions are made on how to ‘tweak’ their diet in order to reach their goals quicker. They also receive a guide on the basics of living a healthy lifestyle called ‘Foundations’. Furthermore, all clients receive our exclusive motivation program ‘Motivate Me NOW’ which comprises of an audio CD and guidebook.
All of the above is dispatched to our clients in hard copy. All the materials will also be available in electronic format to download in their Members’ Area.
Each client also receives on-going support and advice throughout the 12 week program from their own Personal Trainer, to ensure they never lose focus.
Question: While most fitness trainers online create ebooks or video plans, you decided to take on a more personalized approach. Why did you decide to do that?
JS: In all honesty, I don’t believe that a ‘ready made’ fitness plan works effectively. Everyone is different, everyone is unique – and these ‘ready made’ fitness plans don’t cater for that. As a Personal Trainer, I’ve found that everyone has a different level of experience, and has a different level of knowledge regarding exercise and nutrition.
The beauty of SquiresFitness is that our entire philosophy puts each individual client first, and our entire service is moulded around each client.
Question: You create a personalized fitness and nutrition plan for each person. What are the main criteria of this plan? How do you ensure that it fits each person?
JS: Well, we firstly take into account their previous exercise experience. Then their current fitness levels / ability. We then look at what they want to achieve. At this point we can start to form together a routine. We then understand what the clients lifestyle is like – how many times per week can they exercise? Where will they exercise – the park, at home, or in the gym?
When we have all this information, we go through a similar process for their current eating habits.
We are then in a position to fully understand our client, and are able put together a plan of attack for them to meet their fitness goals.
If a client is struggling with anything at any point, we are always on hand for advice or support.
Question: Is SquiresFitness a fat loss program or does it work for other fitness goals as well, muscle building, for instance?
JS: Interesting point to note. Regardless of what our clients goals are, we can tailor a workout routine and provide diet advice specific to their individual goals, whatever they may be.
All of our Personal Trainers are experienced with weight loss, muscle building, increasing fitness levels, toning up and even focusing on clients problem areas.
So whatever our clients want to achieve, we can provide a solution to meet their needs.
Question: Who would you say that SquiresFitness is for and who is it not for? Can people who haven’t worked out in years use it? Men and women both?
JS: Squires Fitness would be ideal for anybody who is looking to get in shape, but are currently struggling, either men or women.
