Q: I’m here with Jeff Cavaliere, author of the Athlean-X fitness program. Thanks for taking the time for this interview, Jeff. For the sake of our readers who are not familiar with your work, tell us a little bit about your experience, credentials, and so on.
Well as the guys out there may not know, I am the former physical therapist and strength coach for the New York Mets, a writer to Men’s Fitness magazine and the current trainer to numerous star professional athletes and celebrity clients. I created the AthLEAN-X Training System to give the more guys the ability to get access to the same training programs that I use to exclusively train these clients and to now…for the first time, start getting the same physiques that these guys have.
Q: Athlean-X has a lot of multi-jointed, more movement oriented exercises. What is the advantage of this kind of exercises over traditional weight training?
In my opinion, if you’re not training this way, you’re leaving a significant amount of potential muscle growth and fat loss on the table. The advantage to this type of training is that it mimics the way the body demands to be trained. Our bodies were built for cross-training. Even when you go back to the days of the caveman…we needed to not only be strong, but also mobile and functional in order to survive. Well, our DNA hasn’t changed since then….but for some reason our training has. And it’s a mistake. AthLEAN-X has taken the essence of these core principles and brought them back together and applied more current elements of athleticism into the system…and the result is a program that hits the mark time and time again for producing that lean, muscular and ripped…but functional body.
Q: You use a lot of tubing exercises. Why does tubing play such a big role in Athlean-X?
Again, tubing is very functional. The funny thing is that people think of tubing and immediately think “no way I can build muscle using it!”. And that’s wrong. As a matter of fact, a program that doesn’t utilize at least some resistance band work is absolutely 100% missing the mark when it comes to building maximum fat free muscle. The reason has to do with strength curves. Weight training alone can never tap into every strength curve necessary for promoting peak growth. Resistance tubing hits that area near full muscular contraction that is almost impossible to get at with traditional dumbbell and plate exercises. Since when I set out to create the ultimate program for creating the ultimate physique, I knew I couldn’t in good conscience write one up that didn’t address this need by overlooking band work.
Q: Can athlean-X be used by a person who is not used to exercising?
Absolutely! All are welcome to come on board TEAM ATHLEAN! Really. With the Xercise Companion Guide that comes with the program…that spells out each of the 122+ exercises with descriptions and pictures, even the person completely unfamiliar with the gym can look at the reference number that is next to each exercise on the workout sheets and quickly refer to the manual and have a complete confidence in themselves that they are going to execute the exercise correctly! It truly is a step by step system for fat free muscle growth that just takes a little bit of initial motivation to change to get the ball rolling and the rest takes care of itself.
Q: Would you say that your program works for men and women both?
You know it’s funny. When I initially wrote up the program I definitely did so with the guy in mind. However, that said…the woman that have said “screw that…I want to be AthLEAN too!” have done incredible. So much so that one of my feature testimonials has just come from a woman of two who had been doing the program for 8 weeks and literally transformed her body. It’s incredible! So I’ve changed for sure. AthLEAN-X is definitely for BOTH men and women. The difference of course is the amount of weight being used, but the movements remain the same and accomplish even more than they previously did.
Q: In our world, people are more interested in looks then functionality. How do functional exercises actually help you to look better as well?
As I pointed out before…our bodies actually prefer and need to work out this way. Once they are reexposed to this type of training (for some….for the very first time) they respond remarkably well and start adding muscle much more easily than they had at any point prior to starting the program…or this type of training. It’s the movement based training that complements the weight training very nicely.
Q: What kind of person is the Athlean-x program for?
AthLEAN-X is for anyone out there who is seriously tired of not looking the way that they want to look. It’s for those guys out there who look at the athletes that they see on television each and every day and say “damn…look at Kobe’s arms….I wish I could have ams like that” or “those guys are genetic freaks and have advantages that us normal guys will never have” and they couldn’t be further from the truth. The real truth is that with the right training program, the average guy…the nonprofessional athlete can indeed have the same body. I’m certainly no pro athlete, but by training like one…I’ve been able to create that body without ever having to step out on the field or wear a uniform, and so can everyone reading this right now.
