Question: I’m here with Joey Atlas, well known women’s trainer and author of the Naked Beauty program. We’re going to be talking about Cellulite and how to get rid of it. Thanks for doing this interview for our readers, Joey. What can you tell us about yourself so we all get to know you better?
Answer: I love helping people get into better physical and emotional condition. I’ve had many great offers to go into other fields – but my passion for sharing my unique fitness knowledge with people who need it most keeps me in the fitness business. On the academic side – I have 2 degrees in the field; a bachelors degree in exercise science and a masters degree in exercise physiology.
I actually started training and coaching people while still in college – and it always seemed people would just come to me for direction, for specific advice – and I liked this. I realized I had a special knack for helping people get from where they are to where they want to be.
Question: There’s no doubt that cellulite is big business but it seems that conventional products like creams don’t work. Why is that? Why are cellulite creams so ineffective?
Answer: The biggest myths about cellulite are: 1) it’s a skin condition – Or – 2) it’s a ‘different’ kind of body fat. So, since the media has women believing these myths – It is VERY easy for them to sell the topical products which are supposed to “treat” the problem. When in reality – it’s a problem at the muscular level – and therefore cannot be treated with a superficial lotion, cream or beauty treatment.
Question: In a way, aren’t these creams trying to fight the symptom instead of the cause?
Answer: Truth is – the creams aren’t even trying to fight the symptoms. The advertisements actually talk about treating something that doesn’t even exist. It actually amazes me that these products are still allowed to be marketed to unsuspecting women.
Question: A lot of people think that cellulite is a special kind of fat. Is this true or are we all wrong?
Answer: There is no such thing as a special kind of body-fat. It’s all the same no matter where it is. But this marketing angle is very believable by any woman who is so desperate to get rid of this bumpy look on her lower body.
Question: In your program, Get rid of Cellulite – Naked Beauty, you show several exercises to overcome cellulite. What makes these exercises so effective in combating cellulite?
Answer: The exercises target the layers of muscles directly under the cellulite areas. Most average women have let these muscles atrophy – because they don’t exercise them properly. When done properly and consistently – the muscles get very firm and strong. They get ‘toned’ and in doing so – they push outward against the skin which is dimpled. When the muscle pushes outward against the dimpled skin – it gives it a smooth and tight look. It’s actually very simple – it just takes a little bit of effort.
Question: In a way isn’t it wrong to say that you “get rid of cellulite”? Isn’t the goal to eliminate it in another way?
Answer: Yes – you are correct – But I have to start by “speaking the language” that each woman is accustomed to. But yes – you eliminate the dimples and bumps by toning the specific muscles under the cellulite zones. So, you are not getting rid of anything – you are just changing the physiology, so the appearance of the skin improves – which is the desired goal.
Question: Does cellulite get worse over time if it’s not taken care of?
Answer: Simple answer is: Absolutely.
Question: How much of a role does your nutrition play in the formation of cellulite?
Answer: Truthfully – nutrition plays a very small role. See, for the average woman who doesn’t need to lose weight – all she needs is the toning effect of the right exercises. She doesn’t need a 100% perfect diet. An average diet will still get the results as long as the exercises are correct.
Question: Is the Naked Beauty program right for women of all ages? Are there women it’s not right for?
Answer: It’s right for a 15 year old and its right for a 73 year old – As long as they get clearance from their doctor, for exercise. This is not a gym routine – it’s very targeted, very specific – and all done with just a floor mat and a small utility/pantry step. It can be done at home while watching TV or just before work. IF a woman has some health concerns – she’ll want to check with her physician before starting this – or any exercise program.
Question: Is there any equipment required to do the exercises in your program or access to a gym?
Answer: As mentioned in the previous question – all that’s needed is a mat and a step (even a staircase will work well.)
Question: Can you share a success story or two with us?
Answer: I have a lot of them (most ask me not to post them publicly) – But one of the best is actually by a health reporter. She had 3 kids at the time (4 now) – and she had enough of the cellulite – decided to really make an effort… She tried all kinds of treatments – all to no avail. She even tried some general fitness routines without cellulite reduction success.
She came across my program and was skeptical, of course. She gave it a try though and to her great surprise – the program worked. She reduced her cellulite by about 85% according to her estimate. She openly shared this all with me after she had out it to the test. It was a great feeling to know she tried it without bias and she’s been a big advocate for the program and my methods, ever since.
Question: Joey, thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview with me. I’ve learned a lot.
