A lot of people want to lose weight and for a variety of different reasons. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you want to lose weight? What’s the reason why you want to lose those pounds?
This may not seem like an important question to answer, but I think it is. I believe it’s important because motivation is crucial for long term weight loss and unless you have some solid reason for why you want to shed weight, you are not going to stick to your diet plan for a long time.
The reality is that there are good reasons to lose weight and there are “not so good ones”. This may seem like a strange statement but it’s true. The not-so-good-ones can still cause you to lose weight but they meant not be good enough for a long term change in your habits and lifestyle.
So, what are good reasons and what are the bad ones?
Basically, I believe that good reasons to lose fat and get lean are those that revolve around you while the bad ones are those that revolve around other people. Let me share some examples:
Losing Weight to Attract Someone
This can be a great motivational force to try to lose weight. Trying to look nice for someone you want to be with is a powerful motivator. However, what happens if this person suddenly becomes attached to someone else, or moves away, or makes it clear that you and them are just not right for each other regardless of how you look?
You suddenly lost your reason to lose weight. All your motivation is gone. Poof.
The reason is that your entire reason to lose weight was centered on another person.
Losing weight to be healthier
This, on the other hand, is an excellent reason to go on a diet, adopt healthier eating habits, and start to workout regularly. This is all about you. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says, does, or thinks. You can keep focus on your goals.
Someone called you fat
This is somewhere in between. You can use this kind of insult to develop motivation to change your life. However, I urge you to still make this change about yourself and not about any specific person. The idea is to be happy with who you are and not try to meet any other person’s expectation about what you should be like.
Losing weight to look Good
This is probably the most common reason why people try to lose weight. You may say that this is bad because it’s about how you appear in the eyes of other people. However, as long as this is done to look better in general and not appeal to any specific person, this is a good reason.
If an one person can eliminate your reason to lose weight, then it’s a bad one. If not, it’s OK. We do live in a world with other people and it’s alright to take them into our consideration.
Lose Weight Because Someone Told You To
Let me ask you this: are you happy with your life? Does your weight signify any health risk that you should be worried about or are you not really that much overweight? There will always be someone who thinks that we should look thinner, better, have different clothes, and so on. There are people whom you can never satisfy, no matter how hard you try. If you’re trying to lose weight for them, stop.
If you’re happy with how you look and your not endangering your health, there’s no reason to try to lose weight. You’ve already achieved what most people are really seeking: happiness. Don’t let anyone else make you go on a diet. It won’t work unless your heart is into it.
In Conclusion
Losing weight should be for the right goal. You have to keep it about you and not anyone else. This is how you remain motivated and focused on your goals. So, don’t let other people get you down and keep it about YOU.
