Maker's Diet

When Jordan Rubin was afflicted with Crohn’s disease, he began to lose weight rapidly. He went from 180 lbs to 104 lbs rapidly. His nutritionist father then suggested that he look into the Bible for information on what to eat.

Rubin not only took the task seriously, he even went on to form a diet plan, stick with it and get better. The Makers Diet plan is the result of this man’s fight against ill health through wholesome, healthy eating.

Rubin has come up with several ‘innovative’ concepts to healthy, wholesome food. The diet program lasts for 40 days and may be broken down into three phases, each lasting for a period of two weeks.

The first phase works towards cleansing impurities from the body and preparing it to accept organic, healthy, non-processed foods.

In the second phase, you learn about what you can eat while you’re on this diet. The author recommends the intake of foods that are nutritionally sound as well as permitted by God (hence the name of the book). For example, you’re allowed to eat fish that has fins and scales but you must avoid fish that does not have either. Smooth skinned species like clams, crabs and lobsters are out. In the same way, we are allowed to eat meat of animals that have split hoofs (cow, buffalo, sheep, deer) but must avoid those that do not have split hoofs (pigs).

The third phase concentrates on maintaining this new diet and sticking to it in the long term.

The book also focuses on a number of strategies that help curb hunger pangs and limit cravings. For instance, the author recommends ways to balance blood sugar levels. By balancing blood sugar levels, dieters can improve their mental, emotional and physical health.

All through the diet, regular prayer is recommended.

The Makers Diet review

The principles of the diet are sound enough. Avoid unhealthy foods. Foods that are pre-packaged and processed come under this category. Sugary, carbonated foods are also taboo. The author is driving at a diet that urges you to eat natural foods that have been endorsed in the Bible.

Obviously, a diet that is free of processed and pre-packaged foods can help you lose weight and get healthy because this keeps the system free of toxins. Wholesome, organic food is healthy and if eaten in the right quantities, non-fattening too. The author also recommends regular exercise. Thus, the diet is a well-rounded plan that aims to improve the physical, mental and spiritual health of followers.

Note: There have been much discussion of Jordan Rubin credentials. It seems that some of his degrees were given by less than reputable schools. In addition, a supplement line with which he was involved was censored by the FTC for making unsubstantiated claims.

Maker’s Diet Pros and Cons

Pros:

-         Encourages healthy eating

-         Advocates elimination of unhealthy processed, pre-packaged foods

-         Promotes regular exercise

-         Aims to balance sugar levels in the blood

Cons:

-         Requires a major lifestyle change

-         Backed by strong religious overtones which may be unacceptable to some

-         No clinical research or data to substantiate the recommendations in the book

In conclusion

The Makers Diet does everything it can to veer people away from unhealthy foods. But, taking suggestions from the Bible to decide on what to put on the dinner table may seem like a bit too much for some.

In addition, it is unclear whether Jordan Rubin is a person who should be trusted.

However, as a diet, a lot can be gained by making the food choices recommended in the book if people can find it in themselves to overhaul their lifestyles completely.
