Margaret Thatcher Diet Plan

British media is full of details of the extreme crash diet that former Prime Ministar, Margaret Thatcher, went on during the final two weeks of her 1979 campaign.

The Iron Lady, it seems, was not too satisfied with her figure and decided to try to lose 20 lbs in a very short time. To do that, she decided to embark on a ruthless and strict diet plan.

The details of this diet were recently discovered among her private papers of the time which were recently uncovered and publicized due to a law in the United Kingdom which makes all such papers public after 30 years.

What Did She Eat

The diet routine which Margaret Thatcher established for herself was mainly made up of protein, including 4 eggs each and every day. Here’s what she ate according to this report:

  • One or two eggs for breakfast along with grapefruit and black coffee or tea.
  • More eggs for lunch for a total of 4 along with tomato or spinach.
  • Steak and salad for dinner.
  • Although alcohol wasn’t part of the original plan, it seems that the former prime minister did enjoy Whiskey on a regular basis, espcially after eating her meat.

As you can see, this is a very high protein diet, low on carbs and calories. It brings to mind the Atkins Diet.


One thing to note is how carefully the Iron Lady documented her progress. She ticked off every item she ate off  a list she managed. Something that any person who wishes to lose weight should consider adopting.

On the whole, this diet plan does not seem to be the best way to shed weight and keep it off into the future. It is much too strict and depriving. While it may have helped her to enter into 10 Downing Street somehow lighter, this is not a plan I recommend that you try out any time soon. There are more sensible eating plans that can deliver long term fat loss results such as the Diet Solution Program or the Fat Loss For Idiots Diet, just to name a few.
