If you believe that this is a diet where you’re going to be guzzling glasses of martini, you’re going to be disappointed. But, Jennifer Sander offers a curious concept – measuring foods in a martini glass for optimal intake!
Jennifer Sander wrote the Martini Diet to help achieve her own weight loss goals. As you might have guessed already, the book centers around portion control.
The Martini diet revolves around a few basic concepts:
- Eat the freshest and best quality foods
- Focus on what you are eating
- Rise above fast foods and junk foods
- Eat small portions
- No snacking between meals
These principles are laid out nicely and offered for our reading through the book. The author includes celebrity anecdotes, rich doses of humor and fitness tips to drive her points home.
Sander believes that indulgence in moderation is good because it is the most effective way to overcome cravings. But, while you may indulge your sinful desires once every while, you must work towards developing a healthier outlook towards foods. Avoid foods that contain sugar, additives and trans-fats.
Portion control is central to the program. Each individual component of the meal must fit into a 3 oz martini glass. This eliminates guesswork!
So, what do you do if you are eating out? Simple: just eat one-third of what is on your plate! Although Sander sanctions indulging cravings, she is strictly again snacking between meals. Even dessert must be limited to a single bite. And yes, about that glass of Martini – a single glass of wine is permitted with food.
Martini Diet – A review
The Martini Diet is just a new way of doing the same old thing – an interesting way no doubt, but the basics are the same. Sander seems to touch a chord in every woman because she asks dieters to overcome their desire to indulge by opting for spa treatments or shopping sprees.
This facet of the diet, although pleasurable, may cost a lot of money! Fortunately, a sane and effective exercise plan is recommended. She roots for a vigorous exercise. Recommended exercises include horseback riding, ballet and swimming.
Pros:
- Encourages healthy food practices
- Encourages dieters to enjoy the act of eating food
- Encourages effective handling of food cravings
- Encourages portion control
- Moderate intake of alcohol is permitted
- Recipes are included
- Presented well
- Exercise recommendations are good
Cons:
- Portion control makes it a hard plan to follow in the long term
- Encouraging binging may have undesirable effects
- Written for female readers
- Alternatives to food intake are expensive
In Conclusion
The Martini Diet offers an effective route to safe and gradual weight loss, at least in the short term. However, the plan is not very doable in the long term. Portion control using a martini glass can be practiced for a few days or weeks, but not for months and years!
Dieters must take the basic premise of the book and use it religiously until they meet their target weight. After that, they must devise a more practical way of sticking to their new weight!
