In recent months I’ve been hearing and reading more about the concept of personalized weight loss. The idea that there is no single diet plan or method that can work for us all, that each of us needs something different in order to lose weight successfully.
Some go as far as to say that each person needs a personalized weight loss plan that is specifically right for him or her. Otherwise, you are likely to fail to lose weight, build muscle, and change your body.
In this post I want to cover the various levels of personalization and to help you see whether you need a personalized fat loss program yourself.
5 Levels of Personalized Weight Loss
There are 5 main levels of personalization when it comes to weight loss. The fifth, which I’ll get to below, is the most complex of the lot. Let’s see what these five levels are:
Gender
The first way in which you personalize a diet and fitness plan is through gender. Men and women are offered different programs and approaches. The issue of gender is often used as a marketing claim, to paint a picture of a program which is specifically right for some people and not for others.
This is problematic, as the basic rules of fat loss apply whether you’re a man or a woman: you need to burn more calories than those you take in. In addition, the same kind of workouts will be effective for both genders.
The difference is in the body shape that you want to achieve. Men often want bigger muscles than women do and their trouble spots are generally different (men tend to gain fat in the abdomen and women in the thighs, hips, and buttocks). So, specific plans for women, such as the Visual Impact For Women and the Flavilicious Fitness program, do give women a process by which to attain a feminine, sexy figure, but general plans will be good enough for weight loss purposes.
Goals
Your choice of a diet and fitness plan will depend on your goals. If you want to simply lose weight, a good diet plan will suffice. If you want to build bigger muscles, you will need a plan which is focused on weight lifting. Your nutrition plan will also be different. This is why you must define your goals before you choose a diet plan.
Deadline
Your weight loss goal is not only defined by the number of pounds or inches that you want to lose, but also by the time in which you plan to achieve it. To lose 10 pounds in a week or in a month are two different things and each requires its own approach. This type of personalized fat loss depends on what you want to achieve and not on any characteristic you may possess.
Some people need to lose weight fast for a wedding or a big event so they choose extreme methods such as the GM Diet or the Xtreme Fat Loss Diet by Joel Marion. Other people can make do with less intense programs.
Age, Health, and Special Circumstances
There are various health conditions that require unique nutrition plans and approaches. Celiac disease patients require a special diet. People who suffer from diabetes also need their own plans. This is a health based personalization.
There are also plans which are designed for people of a certain age group. The Fit Over 40 plan, for example, was created for men and women in their 40′s or more. There are also plans for teens, new moms, etc.
Personalization Based On Specific Traits
Some people are tall and some are short; some have blue eyes and some brown; some are allergic to dairy products and others to peanuts. We are all made differently and we react differently to food. This is the basis of traits-based personalized weight loss plans.
The idea is that each of us needs to eat specific kinds of food in order to quickly and efficiently lose fat. The way in which our nutrition is right or wrong for us will determine our success or failure.
There are various traits which experts and authors depend on to create a personalized nutrition plan. Some use metabolism and body types such as the Customized Fat Loss plan and the Diet Solution program. Others use blood type or analyze your facial features (facial analysis diet) in order to fit you with the best diet plan for you.
There are reports of people who have seen dramatic results just by changing their diets according to whatever recommendations such personalized fat loss programs make. However, the general effectiveness of some of these methods is unclear.
Taking Personalization To the Next Level, But Not Too Far
For the most part, people lose weight in the same way. You need to workout on a regular basis, do intense training sessions (check out this metabolic resistance training workout), and eat a clean, balanced diet. You also need to be in control over the total amount of calories that you consume.
Don’t set your faith in total personalization. It may not be necessary. You need to do similar things to what other people do in order to see results.
However, if you have failed with numerous diet plans in the past and you can honestly say that you followed them correctly, there may indeed be a need for you to find a personalized weight loss plan which is right just for you. Just be ready to make some big changes to your diet. You may find that some of the food you like best is simply not right for your body type or other physical attribute that you possess.
