Plant Based Diet May Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer

vegetablesA new study which encompassed 63,257 Chinese men and women from Singapore, headed by Dr. Lesley M. Butler, of Colorado State University, found a trend of “decreasing breast cancer risk with increasing intake of a vegetable-fruit-soy dietary pattern” in the 34,000 women included in the study group.

One should note that the findings were derived from the study group of Chinese women from Singapore but Dr. Butler believes these results are pertinent for American women as well.

The study found two distinct food patterns:

meat-starch-saturated-fat pattern and the vegetable-fruit-soy pattern which is rich in vegetables such as Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and bok choy.

Through personal interviews, each individual in the study was given a score for these two patterns.

Within the study group that was comprised between 1993 and 1995, were found 34,028 women with no history of breast cancer  in the data. All these women were between the ages of 45 and 74. Most of these women were thin, did not smoke, and exercises regularly.

By 2005, a good 10 years after the interview process was finished, there were 629 cases of breast cancer among the study group. After analyzing this data, the research team concluded that the more vegetables, fruit, and soy was included in the diet the lower the risk of developing breast cancer became.

No conclusive connection between a meat-starch-saturated-fat eating pattern to breast cancer was found.
