I believe that part of the reason why childhood obesity is spreading like wildfire in America and elsewhere is that children have a distorted relationship with food.

A lot of kids these days consume food which is already made and requires little more than warming in a microwave. Food has become a commodity like a t-shirt.

This is a shame because cooking and creating tasty food is one of the simplest and most wonderful art forms that anyone of us can take part in. It doesn’t take art school, just the desire to create something and to relish in your achievement.

I believe that teaching your children how to cook will change the way they view food and the way they eat it.

If you’ve ever cooked a new dish for yourself, you must remember the joy you felt when you took that first bite and realized that you created a tasty meal for yourself. Whether it’s a cake, an entre, or a full meal, cooking for yourself and your loved ones gives food an extra something that is beyond taste and smell and appearance.

One of the main things about eating pre-made food is a total ignorance of the ingredients it contains. While you can read product labels, many people simply disregard them or don’t really understand what they mean. What data from recent years have told us is that you simply can’t postpone teaching your kids healthy eating habits and proper nutrition knowledge. Children who become fat will likely remain fat as adults. A lot of diseases which used to appear in adulthood are inflicting children today as more and more of them become obese.

The time to form good habits is during childhood. Later, it takes getting rid of old, bad habits first, which is a much more difficult change to make. Teaching your children how to cook will help you instil the right eating habits and perspective about food which will serve them for the rest of their life.

Tips about Cooking With Children

Children don’t always have the same level of patience that adults do, so it’s best that you initially cook simple dishes with them that don’t take a long time. In addition, you need dishes that children can take part in preparing, so working with a sharp knife or a blender may not be suitable.

Get your children to love cooking by creating dishes that they’ll love. This will get them interested and they will want to know more. It can also become a wonderful thing for you to do with your children.
