While most people are all too aware of gaining extra pounds, and some people even see themselves as way heavier than what they really are, there is a disorder for people who don’t even know that they’re fat. It’s called Fatorexia and it’s been getting more attention lately as it seems that it’s a unique disorder that a lot of overweight people have. I’m not using the word “suffer” for a reason as I’m not totally sure that this is a disorder that you don’t want to have, though it may cause certain problems as you’ll see further down this article.
What is Fatorexia exactly?
Have you ever seen an overweight person dressed in clothes that don’t leave a lot to the imagination, the kind of clothes that make you wonder what they were thinking when he or she left their house that day? It may be that this is a person who has Fatorexia: they aren’t aware that they’re overweight. When they look in the mirror, they don’t see an overweight person at all. They see a thin person.
You may not see anything wrong with that, and in some cases this is true. Why should it matter that a person is happy with how he or she looks? In a world of first impressions and skin deep appraisals, it’s nice to be able to feel comfortable in your skin for a change. This is why I said that I’m not sure that this is something you wouldn’t want to “suffer” from. Being comfortable with yourself is an awesome feeling.
However, Fatorexia is not without its risks as the person who has it is not aware that they’re gaining weight. He or she may continue packing on the pounds until they become obese and develop serious health issues. As it’s harder to lose weight the longer you wait to get started, being fatorexic can prove to be a big issue.
Thoughts For the Future
What does Fatorexia mean for us as people who are conscious about our health?
It may mean that some people require a totally different approach to weight loss motivation. They aren’t really aware of the need to lose weight at all. Before they can be made to start any sort of diet plan, they have to be made to actually acknowledge their real weight. This may prove to be a new challenge for people with overweight family members, health professionals, and so on.
I don’t know how common Fatorexia is or whether it is really an issue. However, if you know someone who is overweight but doesn’t seem to realize it, perhaps now you know why.
