While alcohol is usually a big ‘no-no’ on most diet plans, a new study dares to state that it can actually be great to keep you slim.
A new research that encompassed nearly 20,000 women found that women who drink moderate amount of wine, one or two glasses a day, tended to be trimmer than women who drank water or soft drinks.
Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, conducted a 13 year study of 19,200 American women aged 39 and over.
All the womens were interviewed regarding their drinking habits and their weight was recorded.
Then, during this 13 year period was over, the women were examined once more and their new weight was once again recorded. The results were a bit surprising: the women who drank a moderate amount of wine gained the least amount of inches while those who didn’t drink any wine at all gained the most.
The researchers believe that the body learns to process alcohol calories in a different way than other calories when it gets used to moderate amounts. This helps the body turn alcohol calories to heat rather than fat and so the body burns more calories.
Not all alcohol is equal: beer seems to be more fattening than wine, and red wine seems the healthiest choice.
Red wine has been shown to have many health benefits such as reducing the risk of blood clogs, raising good cholesterol levels and may even reduce risk of various health diseases.
As to the effect of alcohol on your waist line, keep in mind that this study may have overlooked many other factors in these women’s lives, so I feel that more studies are in order before a definite conclusion is reached.
