Mark Lauren, the author of the book ‘ You Are Your Own Gym’ has created the rock hard bodies of some of the toughest military personnel in the country. He now shares his secret with his readers in this book.
In this revolutionary book, Mark Lauren states very clearly that we do not need hi-tech equipment or expensive gym memberships to get the body of our dreams. Instead, like ancient Greek athletes and sportsmen who trained without fancy machines, we too can use our own bodies to act as the most sophisticated fitness machines created.
In the beginning of the book, there is a quick look into Lauren’s impressive personal history. The author speaks about proper nutrition, crushes the myths people have about ‘diets’, and recommends taking in sufficient amounts of fats, proteins and water.
He also talks about why he believes in strength building instead of cardio exercises. To Lauren, true fitness includes building muscular power, endurance, strength, speed, coordination, balance and flexibility. In this section, Lauren also dispels a few strength training myths, gives basic nutritional information and offers a healthy dose of motivation. So, at the end of this section, you’re most likely rearing to go!
The main part of You Are Your Own Gym consists of over 100 exercises, grouped into push and pull exercises, leg exercises, core exercises and so on. Some of the exercises are classics while others are variations that have been developed by Lauren himself. The exercises are described in great detail with photos and clear instructions.
In the final section, the author lays down a 10-week program that has followers exercising for 20-30 minutes, 4 days a week. Beginners may use these exercises to get in shape while advanced users may want to combine these exercises with others.
You are Your Own Gym: A Review
This is not a weight loss book. Nor is it intended to be a book that teaches you the basics of burning fat. Instead, the focus is on developing a toned, muscular, flexible body that has sufficient strength and endurance. This, to the author, is fitness and good health.
Although the author mostly deals with fitness and less with food and diet, he does promise followers that once they start exercising as mentioned in the book, they will eat better, burn more calories, melt fat and develop lean muscle.
Pros:
- Written clearly and concisely in short, interesting chapters
- Exercises may be performed by anyone, anywhere
- Does not cause bulking up as there are no external equipments used
- May be performed by beginners as well as experts
- Written by an expert who has worked with military personnel
Cons:
- Rather short on cardio workouts
In Conclusion:
You Are Your Own Gym is NOT a diet plan. Nor is it a body building book. It is what it says it is: “The Bible of Bodyweight Exercises for Men and Women”. People who follow the recommendations and instructions in these pages with the specific objective of developing strength, endurance and fitness have a lot to gain from the book. A great addition to any fitness lover’s personal library indeed!

The Book is fantastic
The author actually goes into detail over and over on how burn fat and why the military studies have shown that cardio is not the best way to lose weight.
He states very clearly that muscles burns more calories than anything else, so if you want to lose weight, build muscle first, find out what your resting metabolic weight is, and eat the necessary amount of calories to keep your metabolism burning fat.
Actually the author does deal with food and diet as well as a plethora of other things not mentioned in this review.
This book is outstanding.
