When we think about fast food joints, we usually think of fattening foods and unhealthy ones. We never think of them as being in any way connected to weight loss. That’s why the story of Jared Fogle and the Subway Diet is so remarkable.
Jared Fogle was a regular Joe but with a severe weight issue. As a junior in college, he weight 425 pounds. His daily calorie consumption was enormous. He would eat enough for 2-3 guys.
He tried numerous weight loss plans and strategies but failed to lose weight and to keep it off. Then, he had an idea: what if he only ate Subways sandwiches from now on. What would happen…
The results were astonishing. Eating 2 of his meals each day at a near Subway place, Jared Fogle lost 245 pounds in as little as a year. And he has kept it off since.
In 2000, when his story became public, it was quickly endorsed by Subway and they hired him to tell his story as a promotional tool for them. Subway sandwiches sales rose by over 15% in the following year.
Jared Fogle became a semi-celebrity and his story has inspired many people in the US and around the world.
The Subway diet became famous and soon other people began reporting good results with it.
How The Subway Diet Works
When you follow Jared Fogle’s Subway Diet here is how you eat:
- Breakfast – Cereal with skimmed milk and coffee
- Lunch – Turkey Subway Sandwich
- Dinner – Veggie Subway sandwich
- Snacks – Fruit
The veggie and turkey sandwiches are the optimal choice because they’re low in fat and calories but do provide a balanced nutritent consumption.
Of course, there is nothing magical about eating sandwiches or subs. Jared Fogle simply reduced his calorie consumption and managed to lose weight. He could’ve done it with any other restaurant, but he felt that these sandwiches were the way to go.
I love Subway myself, so it’s good to know that they’re indeed healthier than other fast food options.
Jared also recommends exercise like walking several times a week to make sure your weight loss sticks.

A few years after he became famous, Jared Fogle published a book called:

It’s more of a motivational book than a diet plan. Jared turned his story into life lessons which can help you with practically any goal you set out to achieve. He shares the pain he used to feel and the sense of triumph he now feels. I know that this is a book worth reading for anyone who wants to shed fat, even if it’s not by eating Subway sandwiches.
Subway Diet Pros and Cons

- Healthier option if you’re into fast food anyway
- Works for vegetarians
- Not really a diet plan but more of a personal story
- Will require you to take an additional step to really change your lifestyle
- There is no diet support as there is no diet program, really.
Jared Fogle’s story is inspirational and the Subway Diet may work for you. However, all that he did was to cut down the amount of calories that he ate. That’s it. You won’t be eating sandwiches for the rest of your life, so this isn’t a real lifestyle change.
That’s not to say I don’t recommend his book. A lot of people find it inspirational. You can probably get it at most book stores or online at Amazon.
